What is a Chili Cook Off?
A social event, similar to a barbecue, where competitors prepare their own recipe and submit it for judging. A cook-off may be an informal gathering with the simple goal of sharing recipes and enjoying food, or it may be a large-scale event with an official panel of judges and substantial prizes for winners.

Where did chili get its start? How was it first created?

Difficult to determine. Most common is in the mid-1800's Texas trail cooks had to feed hungry cowboys on long trail drives, using whatever ingredients they could find.

What are the different types of chili?
Chili Con Carne - spicy stew containingchili pepper and meat. Traditional varieties are made using chili peppers, garlic, onions, cumin, and ground beef. Beans and tomatoes are frequently added.
Chili Verde - native to Northern Mexico. Form of stew traditionally prepared with pork shoulder. The base is a slow cooked meat. Sometimes it is ate with tortilla chips. It can also be wrapped in a taco. Verde means green.
White Chili - alternative to traditional tomato-based chili. Usually contains white beans and chicken, sometimes different types of cheeses.
Vegetarian Chili - contains no meat. Usually contains a lot of onions and vegetables, and a lot of different kinds of beans.

Chicken Broth - 4 cans ($2.69)
Shredded Chicken - 1 pound ($4.59)
Vegetable Oil - 1.5 Tbsp ($2.99)
Chili Powder - 1 tsp ($2.59)
Cumin - 1 tsp ($2.59)
Oregano - 1 tsp ($2.19)
Salt - pinch
Pepper - pinch
Onions - 1 ($.84)
Garlic - 2 cloves
Green Bell Pepper - 1 ($1.99)
Jalapeno Pepper - 1 ($1.99)
Cheese - 1.5 cups ($2.29)
Tortilla Chips - 1 bag ($3.49)

Steps:
1. Get Ingredients
2. Cut up all ingredients
3. Cook the chicken on stove
4. Add beans and broth
5. Add the rest of the ingredients
6. Put in serving dishes
7. Top with tortilla chips
8. Bake in oven
9. Serve
